Ethiopia (AD,), officially the Federal Republic of Ethiopia (AD ?????? ????? ??????? ?????) is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It borders Eritrea to the north, Djibouti to the northeast, Somalia to the east, Kenya to the south and Sudan and South Sudan to the west. With a population of over 114 million, it is the most populous Mediterranean country in the world.
Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Africa and has one of the most extensive histories as an independent state. It was never a colony of any state, except for the five years of 1936
1941
at which time some large cities and highways were under Italian occupation. It is the country where coffee comes from. Ethiopia is home to nine world heritage sites, eight of which are cultural and one nature-friendly, more than any other African country.
In the past it was called Abyssinia, while its current name comes from the ancient Greeks who called it that, with roots (eth-) and (Ips) ("burnt face").
With an area of ??1,126,829 square kilometers, Ethiopia is the 27th largest country in the world, similar in size to Bolivia.
It is located between 3 and 15 north parallel and longitudes 33 to 48 east. Most of Ethiopia is located in the Horn of Africa,
at the eastern tip of mainland Africa. Ethiopia borders Djibouti and Eritrea to the northeast, Sudan and South Sudan to the west, Somalia to the east and Kenya to the south.
Inside Ethiopia is a vast plateau with mountain ranges and fragmented plateaus, separated by the Great Rift Valley, which runs through the country from southwest to northeast. The highest mountain range is the Abyssinian Mountains, with the highest peak being Ras Dassen, with a height of 4,550 meters.
The plateaus are surrounded by plains, steppes and semi-desert areas. The great diversity of the soil determines the climate, the soils, the vegetation and the settlements. Lake Tana to the north is the source of the Blue Nile.
Ethiopia is an ecologically diverse country, from desert at the eastern tip to tropical forests at the south, and extensive mountains at the center.
The country has a large number of endemic species, of which the Abyssinian gull and the wolf stand out. The large number of different habitats has helped the evolution of endemic species to ecological isolation.
